Poem: ‘The Eagles Still Soared,’ by Toni Payne, A Celebration of Nigeria’s Super Eagles AFCON Win

The Super Eagles Nigeria Win AFCON Title“Nigeria won their third Africa Cup of Nations title, beating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final. Midfielder Sunday Mba scored the match’s only goal and it was one worthy of a title. In the 40th minute, Mba took control of a deflected ball just outside the box, flipped the ball over a defender’s head and scored with a volley just before another defender could get to it.

Of course, a guy named Sunday had to be the star of a cup final taking place on a Sunday. Nigeria held on to the lead and sealed their first AFCON title since 1994.

With this result, the field for this summer’s Confederations Cup is now complete. It will be: Brazil, Spain, Uruguay, Mexico, Italy, Japan, Nigeria and…Tahiti.” – Yahoo Sports

In celebration of this historical win,Nigerians across the globe have been celebrating. One such celebration is the poem written by Nigerian fashion and entertainment entrepreneur/celebrity Toni Payne. Enjoy.

“The Eagles Still Soared” by Toni Payne

Against all odds
The Eagles still soared
Arise O’ compatriots
Nigeria called, the eagles obeyed,
leaving naysayers feeling dismayed

Against all odds
The Eagles still soared
A Keshi led team that was hell bent
on rebuilding our glory’s tent
your character was tested,
but you still attested
to being a team
to bring home the dream

Against all odds
The Eagles still soared
A show of strength
They played for me and you
Dint give us a reason to feel blue
United our nation
To maximum proportions
With one common denominator
That we would be the champions

Against all odds
The Eagles still soared
An abundance of skills u displayed
Like the true eagle, you transcended
The pride of a nation, you responded
Dedication to your country
Did not halter, it did not falter
History in the making
This glory worth taking
We showed Mali no mercy
its been a long time coming
Our people kept humming
We hope they bring it home

Against all odds
The Eagles still soared
The time of reckoning arrived
Nigeria would not be deprived
Though we had a draw with Burkina Faso
We met them again, brought them down with our lasso
A show of purpose and determination
Our footballs pride, you made an assertion

Against all odds
The Eagles still soared
The pride of a nation
You call them the Super Eagles
We call them our Champions
