LBW 037: Meet Eunice Cofie, Entrepreneur & Chemist and Ladybrille Woman of the Month January 2016

Growing up in America as the daughter of Ghanaian immigrant parents, Eunice Cofie was bullied because of her dark skin resulting in a really damaged self-esteem. It wasn’t until her father introduced her to science that it shifted her thinking from the bullying of her peers. Today, Eunice, often noted as the modern-day, Madame C.J. Walker, is making great strides in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. She is the President and Chief Cosmetic Chemist of Nuekie – an ethnic dermatology company. The company specializes in research and development of dermatological products for ethnic men and women.

Eunice is a graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) with a degree in chemistry/molecular biology. Her deep commitment to social causes worldwide has led her to make a positive impact across the globe, specifically in Ghana and the Philippines. While in college, Eunice spent her summers working in a village community in Ghana, West Africa implementing the Save a Million Lives HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program.

As the former Miss Black Florida USA, she spent a year promoting her platform Preventing Childhood Obesity and Diabetes through Education and Life Transforming Habits. She was able to contribute greatly to her community by inspiring young people to live healthy lifestyles.

Eunice has been featured in numerous prestigious publications. She was honored by the World Economic Forum as a 2012 Young Global Leader. Forbes.com named her as one of the “20 Youngest Power Women In Africa 2012”. She was also featured in Scientific American as “What a Scientist Looks Like” and has been featured as Profile of the Week in STEMinist. The Governor of Florida and the Florida Commission on the Status of Women recognized Eunice with the prestigious Florida Achievement Award for her commitment to improving the lives of women and families in her community. Eunice was named by the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper as one of the “25 Women You Need to Know in Tallahassee”.

Eunice is a sought-after speaker and has spoken at various conferences in the medical, beauty, science and technology industries.

Ladybrillers, we close out 2015 with our celebration of Anina, a fashion model and technology entrepreneur, as our woman of the month for December. Back to our woman of the month, Anina is the founder and CEO of the 360Fashion Network, a company which organizes the largest fashion technology events in Asia. An expert on fashion technology, entrepreneurship, illuminated clothing, and China, Anina is also a worldwide public speaker on fashion technology.  She has spoken at top technology conferences including Mobile World Congress, Le Web, LIFT, DLD, China Fashion Week, China Fashion Forum, Huawei Innovation, Dutch Week of Innovation, TechNode, and PingWest SYNC.

As an international model and the only foreigner to have ever been selected to win an award at the China Fashion Awards, she has modeled for Sonia Rykiel, Dres  van Noten, Dirk Bikenberg, Salvatore Ferrragamo, traveled the world and worked in all the fashion capitals from New York, Milan, Paris, London, Sydney, and more. Anina is an expert at integrating technology into fashion clothing. She works with fashion designers and technicians to create new wearable technology in clothing and accessories.

LBW 032: Meet Kahindo Mateene, Fashion Designer & Founder of MODAHNIK

Kahindo Mateene is a fashion designer of African heritage (Democratic Republic of Congo) who fuses Western and African cultures to create unique feminine designs that flatters today’s woman. The designer who  launched her label Modahnik in 2009 also engineers her own textiles every season. Mateene moved to the United States in 1995 to begin studying International Business & Economics. After successfully obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree, she began studying fashion at the Illinois Institute of Art. Armed with a BFA in Fashion Design and a BA in International Business & Economics, Mateene was accepted into Chicago’s Fashion Incubator at Macy’s 2011 Residence Program.  At the conclusion of her extensive education and training, she landed a spot as a contestant on Season 12 of Lifetime Network’s Emmy-Nominated Project Runway television show.

Mateene has featured on numerous media publications including Ladybrille and in 2012, was named one of Ladybrille’s design talents to watch. Her collections are sold online at Zappos, Sapelle, Modavanti and in store at Nomads Hawaii, Flordora and Hasana.
