Audi Joburg Fashion Week, Winter 2009-House of Machere

Pairing red carpet/business worthy designs with African inspired head ties can be quite tricky. A balance has to be struck where classy, sexy elegance seamlessly integrates with African culture in a way that says,’my look is uniquely African yet cosmopolitan.’ The House of Machere 2009 Winter collections struck that balance on the runway.

House of Machere played with rich fabric colors like yellow and greens to create colorful African styled head-ties fitting for work, red carpet or church services. The head-ties were matched with elegant simple khaki, silk and cotton dresses, making the collection spectacular and memorable.

Wearing an African head dress is still fabulous there is no reason to explain that to anyone. Westerners have been copying the look for decades using the style in their own fashion shows and claiming it as their own. We don’t have to abandon our culture in the process of becoming “Afropolitans.” Our culture is what will sustain us in the future, once we lose that we have nothing. The desire to assimilate into western society will render us virtually invisible, it’s bad enough that the world has already excluded the continent. How far are we willing to go to do the same? Every culture is unique and contributes to the worlds humanity, we have contributed a sizeable amount but have received the smallest dividends. Our style is simple but it's still beautiful and fierce! Clothes don't make the woman, they just enhance our beauty.

I love that last dress. It's gorgeous. And the neckline…va va va voom!
