Arise Africa Fashion Week ’09, Craig Port

“”Flight,” the title of the spring/summer collection by Craig Jacobs for Fundudzi, presented by Nando’s Peri Deli, is perhaps the most ambitious collection by the ethic chic label.

Having recently joined a selection of the world’s leading designers including Versace, Michael Kors, Donna Karan and Diane von Furstenberg, in being featured at a prestigious Danish exhibition on sustainability, the label has increased its commitment to environmental consciousness by producing a collection in which every garment is either solely or partly made from eco-friendly fabrics. The collection reinforces the Fundudzi mantra of clothing with a consciousness.

Formed five years ago, Fundudzi is inspired by the sacred lake of the VhaVenda who believe you can hear their ancestors drumming beneath the waters of the lake at night. Jacobs says, “from the beat of the drum to the advent of wi-fi, communication is at the heart of our existence and there is no more powerful agent for the consciousness of the self than what you choose to wrap around your body.”
