On December 25th, 2009, Christmas day, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a son of a wealthy Nigerian businessman, attempted to blow up Northwest Airline flight 253 heading from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan. Abdulmutallab obtained a visa and was allowed to fly despite being on a terrorism watch-list. Abdulmutallab’s attempt was thwarted by brave passengers who were able to restrain him from his deadly attempt.
A closer look at Abdulmutallab’s profile raises even more questions and also sees the USA, Nigeria and other countries speaking against terrorist acts and promising to take even more steps to defend against terrorism. Abdulmutallab’s father is a retired chairman of a Bank in Nigeria. Abdulmutallab attended a British school in Togo, he studied mechanical engineering at University College London and according to his family somewhere between his studies in Togo and London was when Abdulmutallab began holding extreme religious views. During this period, he denounced his family and spoke about sacrificing his life for Islam. His father concerned about his son’s extreme views alerted the US and Nigerian authorities about the possibility his son could harm others. Mr. Abdulmutallab Senior’s warnings were ignored.
