Nike Akinola London African Inspired Spring/Summer 2010 Collection. Nike tells us about her collection:
“Fresh colour combinations, subtle fusion of African prints, preppy pieces, prom dresses, sharp shouldered crop jackets, and free flowing cocktail dresses are all drawn together to create an essential wardrobe that will take the Nike Akinola London woman from her contemporary Autumn/Winter wardrobe into the global fashion traveller of Spring/Summer 2010.”
The designer’s Spring/Summer collection is described as a collection “with the optimism of spring, with cool colour palettes of Turquoise and traditional azure Blue prints. Sun-fire yellow and meadow-like greens combine to reflect the change in seasons and new pastures.”
Inspiration? “The Long Weekend . . . this collection captures the very essence of what it means to be an independent woman going into a new decade.”
What it all means? “Whether you are travelling for business, going away with your girlfriends or a long romantic weekend with that special someone, this collection has everything for the global fashion traveller. “I wanted to design something exciting that already fits into an existing wardrobe, the rest is down to the individual to mix and match as she sees fit. I give you the pieces to update your personal style.”
Additional richness and modernity is achieved throughout the collection with muted down tones of Dove, Silver and White. Silhouettes focus on clean lines and piping. Volume is created by layering and accentuated hemlines. Classic elegance is mastered through pencil skirts embellished with boudoir lace for sexiness, and crop jackets for elongated body lines.
Whilst prints have been incorporated beautifully into the more grown up pieces the collection also boasts a playful and child-like undertone in the form of some truly original T-shirts from traditional African prints for customers all over the world. The T-shirt series entitled “Blossom” takes center stage with a Pastel pink flower and lady bird design which she set about bringing to life by sourcing the traditional African prints, cutting and hand stitching each one to form the eclectic and abstract designs. Adorned with the finest Swarovski Crystals, the great floral prints and patterns work brilliantly on fresh whites. By mixing the ethnic inspiration with denim you have the perfect and most fashionable utility pieces.”
