Onwu’s compelling story, positive disposition despite the challenges life has dealt her and her family, her commitment to women health issues, grace and style earned her the coveted title.

“The Miss Africa USA Pageant grand finale which took place on Saturday June 29 2013 at the Fillmore Theater in Silver Spring Maryland attracted a very diverse audience from across the continent of Africa, The United States and Canada. The huge Performing Art Center was full at its capacity of 1200 as everyone watched on the edge of their seats as each finalist from the 21 African Nations represented took to the Stage to contest for the coveted crown. Miss Kathy Onwu who hails from Enugu State in Nigeria, currently a resident in Nashville TN, USA emerged as the Queen. It was certainly a very tough competition as described by the Judges and Audience. The top 5 were Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Kathy Onwu is 25 years Old Registered Nurse Pursuing a Masters Degree to further her career as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Her Mission is to campaign and raise awareness about Breast Cancer, prevention and treatment as well as promote education and health in Africa and The United States.
Kathy Onwu is the epitome of what it means to be an African girl in modern day America. As an ambassador for
Vanderbilt’s Coalition for Healthy Aging Women’s division, aiding their program by implementing their “Simply Pink” breast health workshops to educate others on the importance of self breast exams and early detection. Her passion for people equips those with knowledge to better themselves in all aspects of life.
Kathy’s nonprofit Vala inc. is founded upon the premies of advocating healthcare and encouraging education. Kathy’s desire as Queen is rooted in progression of Breast Health awareness and education. Her goal is to support by facilitating health care screenings, educational materials to men, women and children of undeserved populations; while focusing on
Breast Health. Ultimately, her goal is to provide a not for profit women’s clinic in
Nigeria to advocate preventing the preventable in women and children of under served populations. By doing so, materials, and services will be provided to encourage women and young girls to maintain a healthy status. She will join forces with other organizations sharing her mission and vision in the United States to leverage support to help the needy populations in Africa and here in the United States.

At the end of each Presentation she proudly presented herself as ‘I AM NIGERIA’.”
