Ladybrille Music: Omawumi Takes on Sexual Abuse ‘If You Ask Me’ (Audio)

Last year, Ladybrille Magazine closed out 2010 by, for the first time, taking on a taboo subject, child sexual abuse in Nigeria, with Shei Funmi a celebrity blogger and Ladybrille Man of the Month for December. In that feature/interview Shei revealed he was sexually abused by his male cousin when he was only ten years old. He discussed his struggle with the abuse and what he was doing to heal.

This month and year, 2011, Omawumi who is no stranger to you all continues where Shei stopped in shinning the much needed attention on childhood sexual abuse in Nigeria. From what we can tell, it appears to also be a first by a musician in the country. In her latest single ‘If You Ask Me,’ Omawumi narrates the story of a young girl who is sexually abused by her father. The mother is absent and the father has sex with his young daughter getting her pregnant. The lyrics are moving, the vocals impressive as Omawumi shows off her very strong vocal range; and the overall sound track is well produced by the talented music producer, Cobhams Asuquo.

‘If You Ask Me’ is an extension of Omawumi’s work as an Ambassador for Project Alert which advocates on issues of sexual abuse and reproductive health.

Please support quality African music and musicians like Omawumi with your purchase of her latest album ‘Wonder Womanhere.
