LBW 049: Meet Colleen Quen, Ladybrille Woman of the Month February 2017

Recognized by industry luminaries across the globe, couturière Collen Quen seemed to have it all. Her masterpieces appeared in Flair, WWD, International Herald Tribune, Vogue (France), and America’s Next Top Model. Her legendary artistry led to a decade of costume commissions by the internationally famed Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet Company. A native of San Francisco, Quen was chosen by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to participate in its 75th Anniversary Muse Campaign. Her creative spirit was paired with Henri Matisse’s Femme au Chapeau, an iconic artwork from the SFMOMA collection. She exhibited her 2008 Butterfly Dream installation at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) for the Shanghai Biennale in China. In 2009 Quen narrated her Guizhou, China, visit with the Miao and Buyi minority groups in Interpreting Ancient Chinese Fashion, a 60-minute PBS documentary. In 2010, evoking the Silicon Valley experience, the National Endowment for the Arts granted Quen a rare opportunity to participate in Surface and Shape: TechStyle and SoftWear, an installation for the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles.

However, there was one thing missing, good health. Five years ago, Quen’s world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In this 49th episode of The Ladybrille Woman Show, Quen, our Ladybrille Woman of the Month, shares her story and how she recovered from breast cancer through an unconventional healing path, her new found hope and latest artistic projects.
