Applications for the 2012 Talbots Scholarship Program Now Open
18 Scholarships Totaling $200,000 to be Awarded
Women’s specialty retailer Talbots announces the launch of the Talbots Charitable Foundation’s 2012 Scholarship Program, which empowers women to enrich themselves by returning to college later in life. For the 2012 academic year, the Foundation will award 17 $10,000 scholarships and one $30,000 Nancy Talbot Scholarship Award, in memory for the company’s founder. This award will be presented to the finalist demonstrating creativity, conviction and an entrepreneurial spirit
The Talbots Scholarship Program is accepting applications online now through January 3, 2012 at Talbots.com/scholarship. The program is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a division of Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation of America, Inc. The following women will serve on the panel of judges to assist in the selection of finalists:
- Joy Bauer, America’s favorite nutritionist and author
- Kate Betts, fashion editor and author
- Jean Chatzky, award winning journalist and best selling financial expert
- Rachael Chong, founder and CEO of Catchafire, helping nonprofits access probono
- Sunita Cooke, president of Grossmont College
- Kelly Corrigan, New York Times bestselling author
- Ann Daly, career coach, consultant and author
- Beth Kanter, blogger, social media expert and author
- Gloria Cordes Larson, president of Bentley University
- Pamela Mitchell, founder and CEO of the Reinvention Institute
- Mary Alice Stephenson, fashion and style expert and commentator
- Trudy Sullivan, president and CEO of The Talbots, Inc.
“We believe that education opens opportunities for women and are very pleased to increase the number of scholarships that will be granted in 2012,” said Lori Wagner, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Talbots. “Every one of the 15 years we’ve been running the Program, we’ve been awed and inspired by our applicants’ determination and ability to re-imagine the world as they know it.”
Eligibility requirements include women who currently reside in United States or Canada, earned their high school diploma or GED on or before September 2002, and are currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a college or university.
“Now at 52, I finally have the opportunity to prove that I can succeed in college,” said Patricia Welch, the 2011 Nancy Talbot Scholarship recipient. “Receiving the scholarship allows me to reach my full potential as an artist and educator and fulfill my dreams of utilizing sculpture and film making to assist women and children who are beginning their healing journey.”

The Talbots Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Talbots Charitable Foundation, Inc., an IRS recognized 501 (c)(3) charitable organization. The Foundation provides financial support to non-profit organizations that enrich the lives of women. The Scholarship Program has helped over 600 women pursue their educational dreams since its inception in 1997.

I would love to find out how to become a candidate for the Talbot Scholarship award. I’ve searched the internet and cannot find an application. I recently returned to college after an 18 year break. When I went in my teens and early twenties I majored in drinking and boys. I had a 1.3 gpa going back into college last fall and only 3 credits. I now have a 3.4 and officially a sophomore in college at the age of 39. Well the story goes… at 23 years of age, I was a full blown Alcoholic. I suffered from PASS (Post Abortion Stress Syndrome), among other things. I didn’t think there was a God, but if there was he hated me and was punishing me. I had already been married, divorced, and in that process had 2 miscarriages. I overdosed on alcohol and drugs. It was then the Lord revealed himself to me and gave me a second chance on life. Over the past 15 years I have been blessed with a wonderful husband and 3 beautiful children. Over the past 3 years, I have longed to know what it is I’m to do in this life and how I can use it for the Lord. Well, he directed me to Liberty University where I am currently seeking a degree in Christian Counseling. I hope to one day own a women’s retreat, for recovery and healing to life’s obstacles and hurts. With that said, I really could use the financial help with my studies. Liberty is not cheap but I believe it’s fair priced and the best for my plan of studies. My husband makes about $50,000 a year, which is nice, but we do have 3 small children, a home and all our money goes to that. I currently have financial aid loans piling up and I’d love to find a way to lift the burden from my family. If you have taken the time to read this, I really appreciate you. The Lord is a wonderful redeemer. I’m just so blessed that he saved a rech like me, I feel like I need to learn and grown more in his word and in knowledge of Psychology and counseling so I can share his Testimony in me, to others and shine his light.
Hello my name is Michele I am a single mom of five very supportive children and three beautiful grand children. I too have made alot of mistakes in life becoming a teenage mom and being in an abusive relationship. But now I can truly say that this time in my life I have made the right choice deciding to go back to school to get my assoicates in Business and continuing to get my Bachelor’s after that, we all have made mistakes or bad choices in our lives but as long as you are still breathing we can redeem ourselves with the help of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I spend my time focusing on reaching my goals that I have set for myself and my family. I want to finish my associate’s at College of Southern Nevada and finish my Bachelor degree at Nevada State College. I am currently a sophomore with a 3.87 GPA. My passion is helping single moms with necessities: women and children’s clothing , diapers, formula, shoes any thing that I have or has been donated I distribute from my home. I also volunteer at University of Medical Center Hospital every Friday for four hours. One day I want to start a non-profit called Struggling Moms this is why I deciede to go back to school after 25 years so I will be able to know the business side of non-profits and other businesses I will venture out into later. I would be most grateful to be on of the candidates for this awesome scholarship.
My name is Tongia Simmons-Blackman I am a single mother of 6 adult children and 9 grandchildren I made alot bad choices in my pass and God showed me how turn all that around. And one of my better choices was to go back to school. I’ve been going to Midstate college since Nov.2009. After overcoming a 17 year life of drugs and alcohol addiction I prove theres always a chance to make changes in your life. I also did’nt want apply for the Talbot Scholarship because I’ve always believed oppotunuties like this does not apply for people like me. but thanks to God there is nothing I can’t do. So Windy keep your head up and you do deserve this scholarship and remember keep God up front. All things are possible through him. And I’ll be praying for you!
I HAVE BEEN A SINGLE MOTHER OF 2 BOYS FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS I FINALLY WENT BACK TO SCHOOL 2 1/2 YRS AGO TO BECOME A RN THEN I LEARNED I WAS DIADNOSED WITH A BRAIN TUMOR AT AGE 30 MY DR SAID TAKE 1 CLASS PER SEMESSTER DUE TO MY CONDITION TILL IM BETTER SO I DID NOW I OW FOR THAT ON CLASS AND CANT RETURN TO SCHOOL TO FURTHER MY EDUCATION I FEEL TRAPPED AT 31YRS OLD IN DEPT PLEASE I NEED THIS MONEY TO PAY OF SCHOOL I FEEL EVERY DOOR I TRY TO OPEN IT GETS SLAMMED IN MY FACE.
