We are excited to have designer Currie Lee, owner of the D-Sata fashion label, as our Ladybrille Woman of the Month for February 2011. Currie was born on Valentine’s day in South Korea, raised in Canada, educated in the U.S. and China, married in Italy, and honeymooned in Greece… unable to decide where to live and still “jet setting” from country to country, she is indeed a girl of the world! Retired from practicing law (licensed in New York), she now scribbles & sketches her designs on a worn & torn legal pad (a force of habit from her legal career most likely) and hand-selects materials for each collection during these many trips.
Currie’s passion for fashion began with her naughtily cutting-up her mother’s couture pieces (the most devastating of which was a vintage silk Valentino dress) to recreate “fashion week” with her “Barbie Dolls” as models, to being “dolled-up” herself by her grandmum and mum in skirts and jackets tailored out of the fabric from their “up-cycled” vintage tweed, chenille and houndstooth suits, hence her love for “all things” vintage and black & white!
Bored of accessories flaunting little more than outrageously oversized logos, she revisited her collection of timeless vintage Bottega Veneta clutches inherited from her grandmum and mum, which she had loved as being “exquisite” yet “discreet”, and has sought to embody this same sense of old-world style from bygone eras into her contemporary yet “inimitable” pieces that are recognizable not by their logos but their designs and materials.
Currie is our first Asian to grace a Ladybrille cover! We are excited about this brilliant woman and look forward to sharing her feature this week with you all!
A running feature for 12 years on Ladybrille.com, The ‘Ladybrille Woman of the Month’ celebrates women in business and leadership, who empower themselves and others through their contributions and actions in their local and international communities. In 2014, the feature expanded to include a podcast show. If you would like to nominate a woman to be celebrated, please email [email protected].
