Senseless Attack in Nigeria Reaffirms Need to Help the UN and Its Lifesaving Global Mission
Washington, D.C. (August 26, 2011) – United Nations Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth released the following statement today on the news that UN offices in Abuja, Nigeria, had been subjected to a deadly bomb blast that took the lives of UN employees and local support staff and wounded dozens according to early reports.
“We at the United Nations Foundation stand with the family, friends, and associates of our United Nations colleagues in Nigeria at this time of tragedy. Our thoughts, prayers, and support go out to them and to the extended, global family of the UN system that has been affected by this loss.
“The news of today’s deadly bomb blast reminds us of the courage of the men and women of the UN who dedicate their lives to service around the world in the name of peace, stability, and progress. Members of the UN Foundation Board were in Nigeria last year and saw firsthand the impact of the UN’s work to save children’s lives, improve the health of women, and build an innovative, prosperous future for Africa.
“Today’s senseless attack reaffirms our dedication to help support these efforts in Nigeria, in Africa, and around the globe. We will work closely with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as we look for ways to offer assistance at this time and to build understanding and awareness of the lifesaving work of the men and women of the UN.”

About the UN Foundation
The United Nations Foundation, a public charity, was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. We build and implement public/private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and work to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. Through our campaigns and partnerships, we connect people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems. These campaigns focus on reducing child mortality, empowering women and girls, creating a new energy future, securing peace and human rights, and promoting technology innovation to improve health outcomes. These solutions are helping the UN advance the eight global targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). For more information, visit www.unfoundation.org.
