Congratulations to Derrick Ashong who we first introduced to the Ladybrille audience in 2008, and have shared some of his amazing achievements over the years.
The Television Academy has chosen Ashong’s ‘Take Back the Mic’ as one of three 2015 Emmy Contender finalists in the juried category of ‘Original Interactive Programming.’
“Ashong was born in a house in Ghana with no running water, made it to Harvard, and on to work with greats like Oprah, Spielberg and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. His life as a performer inspired him to create a show that revealed the streets of the world from an artist’s-eye view. Imagine Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, but for the millennial set, using Hip Hop music instead of food as the entry point into the hearts and minds of the local community.
Take Back the Mic works directly with the amp.it platform, on which fans listen to, watch and “amp” the artists’ songs and videos to their social media profiles and gain points for doing so. The fans “greenlit” 9 semifinalist artist profile episodes, ultimately sending the top 3 acts to the finale, where the 3 top-scoring fans joined them.”
