The Second Annual African Diaspora Awards Ceremony and reception: AN Applause Africa Initiative
Prominent contributors to the African Diaspora such as Grammy Award winning Artist Anjelique Kidjo, CNN’s Lola Ogunnaike, and Gbenga Akinagbe from “Graceland” and “the Wire” get recognized for their exemplary efforts in the community.

New York, NY November (21), 2012: Applause Africa’s Second Annual African Diaspora Awards will take place on Saturday December 8, 2012 at the SVA Theater located on 333 West 23rd Street New York, NY. The celebration will (begin) at 6:30 pm with a networking and cocktail reception followed by the Award ceremony at 8:00 pm.

Actress Ebbe Bassey from Nigeria and Sduduzo Ka-Mbili, a South African radio personality at WBAI 99.5FM will host the award ceremony. The distinguished honorees include CNN’s Lola Ogunnaike, Tony Okungbowa of the Ellen DeGeneres show, Les Nubiens, artist Angelique Kidjo, actor Gbenga Akinagbe-to name a few, as well as a keynote address by Amini Kajunju, President and CEO of the Africa-America Institute and a live performance by Nigerian singer-songwriter BEZ.

The African Diaspora Awards aims to identify and celebrate notable and exemplary individuals of African descent who have contributed to the advancement of Africans in the Diaspora and Africa as a whole. This year’s awards will focus on five broad categories: ADVOCACY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, ENTERTAINMENT, FASHION and Excellence IN SERVICE. The event sponsors and partners include Arik Air, the Whitaker Group, AMREF, the Africa America Institute and many others.
The African Diaspora is identified by the African Union as “people of African Descent and heritage living outside the continent, irrespective of their citizenship and who remain committed to contribute to the development of the continent and the building of the African Union”. Thus, given the rapidly growing ties between Africa and the African Diaspora, Applause Africa strongly believes that it is important to celebrate the notable members of the African Diaspora of today in order to inspire leaders of tomorrow.

Started 10 years ago in Nigeria, Applause Africa is a quarterly published lifestyle magazine for the progressive African in the Diaspora. Applause Africa focuses on the people, cultures, philosophies and successes of Diaspora Africa.
The African Diaspora Awards is a special initiative that aims to identify and celebrate exemplary Africans that have genuinely excelled in various spheres of life, as well as individuals in society who have contributed to the advancement of Africans in the Diaspora Africa.
