Is African Fashion Ready for the World?

“Fashion Week with Thierry Henry, Christiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and his ultra-stylish wife Victoria seated on the front-row is probably what many would expect to see at a European fashion capital. If the organizers of the upcoming Africa Fashion Week have their way, however, this could be what we are due to see at this year’s event.

Africa’s rich heritage, her natural beauty and even colonial past have oftentimes served as an inspiration behind global art and much of this comes through in the ever evolving world of fashion, where the interpretation of Africa in cloth has seen late designer Yves Saint Laurent’s 1967 African art inspired collection capturing the world’s imagination. Harper’s Bazaar called it “a fantasy of primitive genius…”

More recently, English designer Paul Smith looked to the Congo for parts of his September 2009 London Fashion Week collection, where he exhibited a Brazzaville dandy gentleman’s look- bright suits and brogues- fused with his trademark traditional British tailoring. ” Read more at IFashion
