In 1979, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), Black Student Union saw that it was critical to organize a national conference for Black students and the Black community to learn about and discuss the social conditions of Black people. Those student visionaries of the Black Student Union, which later evolved into the African Student Union, wanted to create a comfortable environment for Black people to discuss the social, political, and spiritual state of the masses of Black people.
The Black Consciousness Conference has been a tradition on the CSULB for the last thirty-eight years. The conference is the longest standing student conference in California and it has been an immense success over the years. The conference has a strong tradition of being intellectually stimulating for its participants. With a legacy of reaching a wide variety of students and community members from all over the United States, the Black Consciousness Conference has proven to be an exceptional contribution to the community.
On November 18th, 2017, CSULB hosted the 38th Annual Black Consciousness Conference with a theme of ‘The Power of Us.’ Invited speakers included Dr. Boyce Watkins and Ladybrille Woman Alum Funmilola Fagbamila.
