Arise Africa Fashion Week ’09, Thulare Monareng

“Thulare Monareng was born in Soweto. She spent her childhood in Swaziland and Johannesburg before being selected for the American Field Service Program, which allowed her to complete high school in the US. Thulare is a graduate of Xavier University in New Orleans, where she received a BA in Political Science.

Thulare continued her studies in Belgium, pursuing a master’s degree in public administration and management. She also interned with Belgian fashion designer Walter van Bierendonck, one of the Antwerp Six. She then moved to New York to manage the Novo Art Gallery in Manhattan while studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) where she earned a degree in fashion buying and merchandising.

Upon graduating from FIT, she returned to South Africa and later moved to Cape Town and worked as designer and stylist for the TV Show Backstage. A year later she created her own fashion label and presented her first runway collection for SA Fashion Week. This collection has both retail success and was awarded The Most Innovative Designer Award at the Cape Town Fashion Festival in November 2002. After a 4 year break, Thulare Monareng’s fashion label is now being re-born.”
