Black Coffee, Ephymol, Roman Handt, and Floyd Avenue participated in the South Africa Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2018 held at Sandton City Shopping Centre from October 24-27, 2017. Here are highlights from their collections:
Black Coffee
Black Coffee is known for the way it blurs fabrication and fashion. The sharp structural designs are characterised by complex, layered shapes that yield a fastidious fashion sensibility which is restrained and bold. A design goes beyond adornment, often melding the pattern with the body in a meticulous feat of engineering. Despite exacting geometries, garments transition effortlessly between day and evening wear. Jacques van der Watt showed his first collection at SA Fashion Week in 1999. He was a pioneer that heralded fashion as a standalone industry in South Africa when it was restricted to occasion-specific garments. He has been nominated five times for the SA Fashion Awards, winning in 2001 and 2007. In 2009, he was awarded the Mercedes Benz Art Award with an installation that was shown at the Daimler Contemporary Gallery in Berlin. Black Coffee is the 2017 winner of the SAFW Cape Wools SA Designer Challenge.

Roman Handt
“My role as a designer is to question mostly. I’m not there to provide answers, I’m there to provoke.” Roman Handt interrogates the role of the 21st century man through the use of fabric, pattern, cutting and construction methods. He started his menswear label ROMAN HANDT in 2011 and has since been part of a growing menswear design movement. Having worked with numerous niche design companies both locally and internationally, Roman has developed an artisanal approach to his designs. He emphasizes a non-traditional attitude and centres on skilfully constructed garments that transcend boundaries around occasion, situation and masculinity. ROMAN HANDT is for the fearless, the bold, the inquisitive and the worldly individual. It is for the non-typical, a man with an eye for detail and an expression of unique identity. He showed his first collection at SA Fashion Week in 2012.
