Ghanaian-born Edward Enninful has been named the new editor of British Vogue making him the first African/Black man to hold such prestigious position.
In a statement issued to the press this morning regarding his appointment, Condé Nast International chairman and chief executive Jonathan Newhouse called Enninful “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood, and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist.” Newhouse also discussed Enninful’s credentials, “by virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue.”
Although born in Ghana, Enninful was raised in London. At age 16, he was scouted as a model and later enrolled at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London, to study fashion. His college days, however, was cut short when he met the founders of i-D Magazine. Enninful left school to work for the magazine and was quickly promoted shortly after turning 18, making him the youngest ever fashion director for an international publication.
Enninful would go on to become a prolific stylist, forging working relationships with a range of acclaimed fashion photographers including Paolo Roversi, Craig McDean, Steven Klein and Philip Lorca Di Corcia. Enninful’s work has been featured in some of the most prestigious and highly coveted fashion publications including Italian Vogue, and American Vogue.
He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including a OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire award – for his contribution to fashion.
Enninful is currently the fashion and creative director at W Magazine and will assume his new role on August 1, 2017. He replaces Alexander Shulman who has been editor of British Vogue for the past twenty-five years.
