Today, March 8th, 2013, marks the globally celebrated annual International Women’s Day. For African women, while there are still tremendous challenges faced within and outside the continent, there are also tremendous strides and achievements made. One such achievement is the appointment of the First Nigerian woman U.S Judge, Judge Bunmi Awoniyi. Judge Awoniyi is also the first Nigerian, man or woman, to be appointed to the California Judiciary.
On February 1st, 2013, the Sacramento Nigerian community (Sacramento Association of Nigerians, Akwa-Ibom Association of Nigeria, USA (Sacramento Chapter), the Yoruba Heritage International, the Igbo Development Union of Sacramento and more),poured out in numbers to organize, support and celebrate Judge Awoniyi’s appointment.
Africa Music Law™ (http://africamusiclaw.com/), a music law blog founded by Attorney & Publisher Ms. Uduak Oduok, was there to capture this historic event.
Enjoy!
