Bake for Change: Educate the State, Sponsor A Child Initiative

On Saturday the 1st of September 2012 under the Educate the State – Sponsor a Child Programme, Bake for Change in partnership with AIPA (Foundation for the Alleviation of Illiteracy, Poverty & AIDS) issued 10 educational scholarships and 19 vocational scholarships to the Lagos State Ministry for Youth & Social Development. The beneficiaries of the scholarship are wards resident in 6 Special Correctional Centres & Approved Schools across the State.

Educate the State is a joint educational project by AIPA and Bake for Change, which is focused on creating awareness for the importance of education for the less privileged, especially those currently resident in Special Correctional Centres and Approved Schools across the State. Educate the State was launched on Children’s Day 2011. The Sponsor A Child Initiative under the Educate the State Programme, was initiated on Children’s Day of 2012 and Was set up to raise funds to ensure that less privileged children in these Lagos State homes have access to education in private schools within the State or are assisted in setting up their businesses following successful completion of their vocational training and the Lagos State Trade Test or other equivalent certifications have been attained.
Bake for Change & AIPA are great advocates for education, and we believe that education & skill acquisition are the doors to the future, for both the privileged and the less privileged. Without education, everyone remains stagnant in life and the door to a brighter future remains closed.

The scholarship handing over ceremony was graced by a strong presence of members of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth & Social Development, represented by the Special Advisor Ministry of Youth & Social Development – Mr. E.D. Badru, the Director of Welfare – Mr Abdulahi and the Director of Correctional & Elderly Care Mrs. Odukoya.
Furthermore individual donors and sponsoring organizations like the Stalwart Bikers Club, the Crystal Sister’s club, as well as friends of the house made it out to support the scholarship recipients on their big day.

10 educational scholarships were conferred to children ranging from the ages of 6 – 17 in addition to back to school kits. The kids will be attending renowned private schools across the State and will benefit from education from the level they are in now until completion of their Secondary Education.
In total, 19 vocational scholarships were handed out to children between the ages of 16-18.
3 of these scholarships were given to boys who had successfully completed their vocational training and had passed the Lagos State Trade test. These boys were given the tools and equipment to set up their own businesses.
14 of the vocational scholarship recipients will attend vocational training institutes like the renowned Opral Benson Beauty Training School, learning and becoming skilled at various vocations like specialized welding, painting, wood work, hair dressing & Beauty and Spa Therapy.
2 of the scholarships were given to two boys who are already enrolled in vocational centres. The scholarships will ensure that they have all the tools they require for their vocational training.

It was a joyous and emotional day for everyone that attended the re-writing of the stories of these kids.
