Waje ft. Muna "So Inspired" to Take on Domestic Violence in Nigeria (Music Video)

It’s about time we began hearing songs and watching music videos with a little more creativity and powerful story lines from Nigeria’s music industry. Omawumi hit us this week with her music video (MV) ‘If You Ask me,’ a colorful light MV that took on the serious issue of incest and child abuse. This week, Waje follows suit with her song and music video, “So Inspired.” The video chronicles the life of a woman who is abused by her husband/partner and how she ultimately becomes inspired to change her reality and leave.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please find inspiration in Waje’s video to leave. There are NGOs in Nigeria that can help in addition to your family and friends.

To understand the current state of the law on domestic violence against women in Nigeria, check out the story below from last year:

“Over the years, there have been agitations on how to stop domestic violence against children and women in Nigeria which have yielded no result. Recently however, the Lagos State House of Assembly took a giant strides by passing into law, a bill “to provide protection against Domestic Violence and for Connected Purposes.” The Law which came into force in 2007, was specifically aimed at protecting the Victims of domestic violence and it comprises19 sections.

However, since the bill was passed into law and assented to by the former state Governor, Bola Tinubu, few people including legal practitioners were aware of the law. Recently, however, a non governmental organisation, Women Empowerment and Legal Aid (WELA), in collaboration with Falana and Falana’s chambers at a seminar on domestic violence took the challenge to the doorsteps of Nigerians, especially the civil rights organisations and lawyers for the utilization of the law and confront the monster of domestic violence in the count . . . ” Full Story on Vanguard.
