When your finger hits the ‘play’ button whether it be on your phone, mp3 player or car stereo; the infectious melody of “Back When” grabs you with quite the magnetic force. The track exhibits a well glued combination of Afropop, RnB and Pop ingeniously put together by 18 year old singer and producer, Davido.
Using the intro to pleasurably toy with us before the vocals begin, we have already begun bopping our heads back and forth. Both the lyrics and vocals mesh superbly with the soulful yet persistent backdrop, while he explains that he used to be broke, but now counts rendezvous with ‘top girls from Funke to Laide’ as living the good life.
Explosive 10/10 rapper Naeto C makes an appearance that neither increases or decreases our enthusiasm, although he performs well enough to keep us dancing as we anticipate the return to our repetitive, yet favored chorus.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia (U.S.A), Davido reconnects with his Nigerian roots (notably seen through his comedic references to Nigerian washing detergent Omo) and evidently puts a fresh spin on the Afropop scene. No doubt, the young man excites comparisons to Nigerian prodigies Wizkid; and although not as vocally gifted as Nigeria’s Wande Coal, still, we see the potential for multi-skilled Davido to be as large, if not larger than both.
