Kenya just waived goodbye to the 6th Annual AGOA conference which commanded a visit from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. But, the country is left with little chance to catch its breath as it begins prepation for the 2nd Annual MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs).
The 2009 MAMA awards in collaboration with Zain will be held at the Indoor Arena, Moi International Sports Complex, Nairobi, Kenya on October 10th, 2009. Like its 2008 predecessor, the event is expected to be broadcasted on television stations across the continent and the world starting October 17th, 2009! Within Africa, expect to watch the show on MTV base (DStv Channel 322, Daarsat) and terrestrial channels Citizen TV (Kenya), WBS (Uganda), TBC 1 (Tanzania), TV3 (Ghana), Silverbird TV -STV (Nigeria) and AIT (Nigeria).
MTV and Zain, both organizers of the show, have also given a sneak preview of some of the upcoming performers at 2009 MAMA awards. They include:
2008 MTV Awards “Best Female” winner Kenya’s Wahu (Wahu also won the “Best Female Artist”
at Kenya’s 2008 PAM Awards),
South Africa’s Lira who was the 2007 Metro FM Awards “Best Jazz Album” winner for her “Feel Good” album; and a big winner for her album “Soul In Mind” at the 15th annual South Africa Music Awards (SAMA). She won four awards at SAMA.
Ghana’s dancehall star Samini, MOBO-winning artist; and
Jude Abaga aka M.I. “Best New Act of the Year,” and “Best Rapper” at the 2009 Nigerian Entertainment Awards and “Best Album of the Year” and “Best Hip hop World Revelation” at the 2009 Hip-Hop World Awards.
