Enugu State Association (E.S.A) Washington DC Metropolitan Area is a non-profit organization formed in 1994. The purpose of forming the Association was to promote the social, cultural, educational, civic, and general well-being of our members in particular, and Enugu State indigenes based in the United States, specifically in the Washington DC metropolitan area.
This year’s Enugu State Association WDC fundraising event (Enugu Day) is focused on raising domestic violence awareness in the Nigerian and African community in the Diaspora but more specifically in Enugu State, Nigeria.
The funds raised will go towards providing support, resources and financial aid to a Women’s Shelter for Domestic Violence, currently located in Enugu, Enugu State Nigeria.
The Association will be working directly with Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL), an Enugu-based independent, non-political, non-governmental and non-profit organization whose mission is to promote a democratic society free from violence and abuse, where all human rights, ( in particular, women and children) are recognized in law and practice. WACOL, manages and oversees the Women’s shelter for Domestic Violence in Enugu City, Enugu State.
Dr. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, OON [Ph.D. (Nig.), LLM (London), LL.B. (Nig.), BL, Diploma Peace & Conflict Resolution (Uppsala)], is the founding director of Women Aid Collective (WACOL). Dr. Ezeilo is an activist and versatile legal scholar recognized as a leading authority in the field of human rights, especially on the rights of women and children. She was appointed in 2008 as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children, and currently serves in that capacity globally.
