“On June 4, 2012, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a press release that confirmed the deaths of American citizens in a Lagos, Nigeria plane crash that occurred the day before. The exact number of U.S. citizens aboard the Dana Air flight 992 that perished has yet to be reported by U.S. officials, but early reports indicate the pilot was an American citizen. According to an official with the National Emergency Management Agency in Nigeria, crews have recovered 137 bodies from the crash site. Authorities say there were 153 people aboard the plane; it is believed there are no survivors.
NEMA reported through Facebook the plane crashed into two buildings, killing at least 10 people on the ground. The plane took off from Abuja and crashed in the area of Iju/Agbado. Mechanical failure is suspected, however an investigation is underway to accurately determine the cause for the crash.
Premium Times reports that Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Lagos State Emergency Management Area (LASEMA) General Manager has established an information desk located at the Ifako General Hospital. The news outlet continued to report that three children were orphaned due to the crash and were rescued by Nigerian Governor Babatunde Fashola , who discovered the children wandering when he surveyed the area. According to the report, the Governor has brought the children to the Government House until relatives are located.
