“After five months of intensive scrutiny by judges, The Nigeria Prize for Literature Committee has announced an initial shortlist of 11 books in the running for the 2010 literature prize.
The Committee, headed by Professor Theo Vincent, will hold a world press conference on 11th August 2010 at the OceanView Restaurant, Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, at 10am. Other members of the committee are Professor Emeritus Ayo Banjo, Prof. Charles Nnolim, Mrs. Phebean Ogundipe, Prof. Jibril Munzali, Prof. Dan Izevbaye, Prof. Zaynab Alkali, Prof. Rasheed Abubarkar, Mr. Ben Tomoloju, Alhaji Abubakar Gimba & Chief Joop Berkhout
Books on the initial shortlist, in alphabetical order by surname, are:

2. Perfect Mothers by Uduak Akpabio
3. Leopard Woman by Philip Begho
4. Ata Igala The Great by Emmy Unuja Idegu
5. Cemetery Road by Esiaba Irobi
6. Onions Make us Cry by Zaynabu Jallo
7. Queen Ghasengeh by Ziky Kofoworola
8. Belly Bellows by Akinwunmi Orojide-Isola
9. Idia, The Warrior Queen of Benin by Irene Isoken Salami-Agunloye
10. Broken Pots by Uwem Udoko
11. Little Drops … by Ahmed Yerima
The prize for literature rotates yearly amongst four literary genres: prose fiction, poetry, drama and children’s literature, while the prize for science will be awarded to the scientist whose work made the most impact in furthering the frontiers of knowledge. This year’s award goes to drama. The eventual winner will be announced on October 9th 2010 at the Grand award Night.
Mr. Chima Ibeneche, Managing Director, Nigeria LNG Limited will deliver the keynote address at the gala, while veteran Nollywood actor, Sam Loco Efe will be the Special Guest of Honour. ”
