“The Colour in the Desert fashion show, held over two days last week at the Phakalane Golf Estate, was a fashion lovers’ feast.
It was put together by Botswana designer Mpho Kuaho and Phakalane’s Tsoseletso Magang; several designers around the continent were invited to showcase their best designs alongside their Batswana counterparts’.
The event aimed at, not only showing designs, but also at empowering the designers and making them understand the business side of the industry; to this end a workshop was held before the event.
The first night was dedicated to young designers and a few established designers. Botho Chalegbwa won the Best Young Designer prize after showcasing her work alongside the works of Lindiwe Keitz, Naiko Tlogelang, Mummy Molapo, Thandiwe Ntogwa and Kgomotso Gibe.
Some of the established designers came from South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Mpho Kuaho showcased garments with floral designs and lace and Black Trash threw in a few prints. Taibo Bacar of Mozambique brought in fine, clean cut lines and more ready to wear clothes, while Tanzania’s Mustafa brought in an East African flavour.
Botswana’s Mackay Chibani showed playful colours in interesting shapes, while Kenya’s Wamboye showed flowery patterns in interesting colours – salmons, soft browns, bright oranges and lime greens. . . “
