“Yeah (yeah) we bring the stars out/We bring the women and the cars and the cards out/Lets have a toast a celebration get a glass out/And we can do this until we pass out,” raps British superstar Tinie Tempah in his 2010 hit debut single “Pass Out” which won Best British Single at the 2011 BRIT Music Awards.
It is no wonder that many artists have sampled the beat, for promotional purposes, to show off their rapping capabilities. Joining this list are Popular Ghanaian rappers Criss Waddle and Mugeez.
The duo choose to reveal the other side of the cars, cards and champagne glasses i.e. the facade, the lies and length some guys go to score a date. They question why women listen to all these lies? “He dey talk talk but he no go fit to buy” (why do you listen to all these lies. He says all these things but he will be unable to buy).
Waddle, a young MC hailing from Tema, Ghana (so no, not late 80’s England football star Chris Waddle) and ready for world domination, was raised around music success. Born into a musical family, calling late musician Agyeiku of Serwa Koto fame ‘father’ and Ghanaian Highlife singer Kwaisey Pee ‘brother;’ and once living in the same neighborhood as two thirds of Ghana’s RnB/Hip-Hop sensation R2Bees (Paedae and Mugeez), Waddle has been eager to make it on his own.
He does show he can made it on his own and exhibits undeniable lyrical skills with is speedy wordplay and clever delivery of “Guys Dey Lie,” at times in his native language Twi. However, even with the popular Mugeez featuring on the track, we still needed to see Waddle “go in” a little harder on the beat to leave us truly fulfilled. Nevertheless, his efforts still maintain the integrity of Tempah’s monstrous beat retaining the ‘banger’ appeal. Ladies, a couple of replays reminding you “Guyz Dey Lie” might potentially make you “pass out” from the lies. You’ve been warned.
