Kente Redefined: Two American Designers Give Kente a “Hemma Collection” Treatment

Hemma girlsIf you’ve never been a fan of Kente or you’ve been a fan but only relegate it to ceremonius occasions like the upcoming Kwanzaa in the USA or Black history month in Europe (UK), the Hemma Collection founded by two American friends, one studying law (Cindy Gaston) and the other medicine (Edna Bissoon), will REDEFINE the way you look at Kente.

The ladies prepare to launch their 2009/2010 collection and will be holding a collection preview on November 19th, 2009 in New York. They will also unveil the Hemma Foundation, the daughter organization working to improve education for West African youth.

Just in case you missed what Hemma is all about, according to the ladies, “Hemma is a fresh, elegant collection using authentic Kente, a fabric rich in African royal tradition. This textile is handcrafted, ensuring that each garment is distinct and one of a kind. By embracing the fabric used to dress the nobility of Ghana, Hemma allows each client to feel like royalty.”

Listen to them as they discuss their brand in the enclosed video clip.

hmmm, hate to say this but they've boarded the revolution bus a little late. they seem to think they've stumbled on a brilliant concept but several brands have done it before them and several will after them. it is what it is. i don't see any remarkable pieces here but i'm sure there are others for whom collections like this are appealing.
