2011 might very well be the year Nollywood really penetrates Hollywood and who knows, wins its own awards like the Slum Dog Millionaire? Pessimistic? Anything is possible, however impossible they may seem. The latest flick from the brilliant film director and producer Jeta Amata ‘Black and Gold’ seems positioned to do just that.
Starring a cast that includes Hollywood and Nollywood stars (Vivica Fox, Billy Zane, Tom Sizemore, Eric Roberts, Michael Madsen, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, Sarah Wayne Callies, Larry Minetti, Mbong Amata, Raz Adoti, among others); ‘Black and Gold’ is the story of “one local Niger Delta community’s struggle against their own government and a multi-national oil corporation who has plundered their land and destroyed the environment. [T]he chronicles of the Niger Delta crisis is brought to the big screen in the most anticipated Nigerian Movie release yet. Filmed on location in Nigeria and Hollywood, California, the Niger Delta features an array of stars from both Hollywood and Nollywood in the first of its kind Nigerian movie directed by acclaimed Nigerian director Jeta Amata.” The release date is set for 2011. looks nice, but I can't help but notice that the hands manning the equipments are foreign as much as we have directors and actors, we also need DPs and set designers and costume designers and all. The people behind the scenes make up a huge part of the industry too. I am not saying shun foreign assistance, but if we have the capacity use it, if we don't let our prospects shadow those with the expertise…
I, personally, completely agree with you. I think about that often. We are making strides. New York Film Academy's training sessions in Nigeria thanks to Nollywood actress Stephanie Okereke, Nollywood Ex-Actress, Producer and Director Ego Boyo is also, I understand, doing the same, Ms. Joke Silva, I believe, is also doing that. It is a start but you are so right. We need Africans behind the scenes as well.
